Séminaire d’Anthropologie à Bruxelles - Brussels Anthropology (ABBA) : Inge Tvedten - le 14 décembre 2018

Intervenant : Inge Tvedten (Chr. Michelsen Institute)

Titre : Reflections on the (ir)relevance of anthropology for the study of poverty and poverty alleviation

Biographie :

Inge Tvedten is a senior researcher/anthropologist working at Chr. Michelsen Institute in Norway. He has 35 years of experience combining basic and applied research on urban and rural poverty and poverty alleviation – primarily in Southern Africa.

Abstract :

Inge Tvedten’s presentation will draw on publications and experiences from his long career and present two motions related to the (ir)relevance of anthropology for the study of poverty and poverty alleviation : One is for a stronger and more relevant focus in the anthropology of urban poverty by reassessing the contested notion of ‘sub-cultures of poverty’. The second is for an enhanced relevance and influence of applied anthropology on poverty reduction policies and interventions by arguing for multi-disciplinarity or the need to cooperate with other disciplines – particularly economics.
