Since the introduction of the Doi Moi (“economic renovation”) reform program in 1986, Vietnam has undergone a dramatic transformation of public space in both its physical features and its symbolic meaning. In this globally-driven and capitalistic-oriented urban transition, youths are caught between two fires : on the one hand they are subjected to their families’ pressure to conform to traditional values regarding family building and social behavior, and on the other they are expected and pushed to become the driving force behind the new economic expansion promoted by the Government. Following Doreen Massey and Tim Ingold’s definitions of space as a product of interrelations and human activities, my project focuses on the negotiation of identities among young dwellers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Particularly, it addresses public spaces as forums for individual and collective action and expression, spaces of protest and domains for the practice of citizenship, and sites where conflicting memories and contested expectations are performed/enacted.
